When I was a kid Mum would yell at us from the kitchen, ‘MOVE AWAY FROM THE TELEVISION!’
Back then a bag of lollies cost 15cents, Paul Keating was Prime Minister, and the dangers of sitting 4 feet away from our 35cm telly (pictured above) was a very real, very dangerous health epidemic. Heaven forbid our eyes could be viciously poked out by the massive antenna sitting on top of the tiny TV and the fuzzy reception burn holes into our retinas. The fear of my eyes becoming square from too much close television scared me enough to always sit on the couch, at the safe distance of at least 3 meters from the ever so tiny screen.

Hunter sits with me on the rug and we both look up to sing along to Yo Gabba Gabba on the screen, after a few minutes I am taken back to being pre-pubescent and Mum’s voice telling all us kids to move back from the screen… What exactly is the safe distance from a 42 inch flat screen? Considering the size of our unit, I have a feeling the answer might be ‘from in the laundry’.

And so I am apologising now, Hunter Rose, your square eyeballs and bad eyesight will eventually think your current flat screen is ‘tiny’. No we will not be upgrading to the 600 inch Imax telly, unless of course we win the lotto and have a football pitch for a living room.

I was at the Robina health clinic the other day & the recommendation is no tv for kids under 2 & then only half an hour a day after that but not sure up til what age thereafter.

  9. I really wonder about that… We watch it together and sing and dance… I can’t see how that is so harmful?

So wish I could cuddle that little girl again :(
